The biggest news of the week on the LPGA already happened, even before the first ball went in the air at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship. Former World No. 1, a four-time All-American at Arkansas and two-time major champ, announced Wednesday that she was going to retire at the end of the year.
Now age 40, the 13-time LPGA winner and two-time U.S. Solheim Cup captain, wants to spend more time with her family and said that her body has told her that now is the right time.
Lewis is playing in her beloved Arkansas this week at Pinnacle Country Club in Rogers, Ark., for the 19th time. They’re all playing for a $450,000 first-place prize from the overall $3 million purse.
World No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul is not in action but No. 2 Nelly Korda is playing here for the first time since 2022. She’s still looking for her first victory of the season. In all, 17 of the top 25 players in the world are in action, as are 19 of 25 championship this year.
There still has not been a repeat winner all year, a record on the LPGA.
