Four-time PGA Tour winner and 2019 US Open champion Gary Woodland announced on Wednesday that he will be undergoing brain surgery.
The 39-year-old tweeted that he’s scheduled for a September 18 operation “to remove a lesion found on my brain.”
Although Woodland didn’t mention any sort of a timetable, he added, “I’m in good spirits with my family and team by my side and so thankful for the love and support of everyone.” Here’s Woodland’s full message:
Woodland is coming off a down season for him in which he posted only two top 10s in 24 starts. He finished 94th in the FedEx Cup standings to miss the playoffs.
A former college basketball player at Washburn University, Woodland is known for being one of the best athletes on the PGA Tour. He transferred to the University of Kansas after his freshman year to play golf and never looked back.
Woodland’s biggest win of his career came at Pebble Beach in 2019 when he held off Brooks Koepka to win his first major. We wish him the best during this time.
