As the calendar turns to March, the PGA Tour heads east to begin its Florida swing at the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches. It’s the first of four straight weeks with events in the Sunshine State, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Players Championship and the Valspar Championship to follow.

Austin Eckroat is back at PGA National’s Champion Course (par 71, 7,167 yards) to defend his maiden PGA Tour title. A year ago, the former Oklahoma State golfer masterfully handled the Jack Nicklaus design, shooting a 17-under 267 to beat Erik van Rooyan and Min Woo Lee by three shots. However, he returns this time to South Florida off two straight missed cuts.

Eckroat enters the week with +5000 odds, while Shane Lowry arrives as the tournament favorite. The 37-year-old Irishman has finished fourth at PGA National in 2024, fifth in 2023 and second in 2022. Other notable players in this week’s field include Jordan Spieth (making his tournament debut), Rickie Fowler (2017 winner), Russell Henley, Min Woo Lee, amateur Luke Clanton (who will earn a PGA Tour card off the PGA Tour Accelerate program if he makes the cut this week) and Billy Horschel.

The overall purse this week is $9.2 million with the winner claiming a first-place prize money payout of $1.656 million and 500 FedEx Cup points.

One of five courses at PGA National, the Champion Course hosts the Honda Classic every year. Originally designed by Tom and George Fazio for tournament play, Jack Nicklaus redesigned the course in 2014, creating the infamous three-hole stretch aptly named “The Bear Trap.” Routinely one of the toughest courses on Tour, The Champion is a true ball-striking test.
