The PGA Tour’s Florida Swing is set to begin this week with the newly renamed Cognizant Classic at PGA National. The tournament will feature Chris Kirk looking to repeat his heart-warming 2023 victory. No one has been a back-to-back champion in this event since Jack Nicklaus in 1977-78, but Kirk certainly has positive momentum at this course. Not only did he win, but that win kickstarted a 2023 campaign that eventually earned Kirk, who stepped away from the tour in May 2019 to address alcohol issues and depression, the PGA Tour Courage Award.

Kirk’s comeback after an eight-year drought required extra hole to get past Eric Cole. The 2023 PGA Tour rookie of the year will return to Palm Beach Gardens to finish the job. Along with Cole, we’re set to see World No. 2 Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tom Kim, Cameron Young, Sepp Straka and Matthieu Pavon compete on the Nicklaus-designed Champion Course. Florida resident Rickie Fowler will be back after missing the event last season for the first time in 13 years. He won at PGA National back in 2017.

Quite a few pros not yet in the tour’s next signature event, next week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, still have a chance to sneak in due to the Aon Swing 5, which will culminate at the Cognizant. The top five FedEx Cup points earners from the Mexico Open at Vidanta and the Cognizant Classic will get a bid to Bay Hill with Sami Valimaki currently leading the way. Stephan Jaeger, Justin Lower, C.T. Pan and Robert MacIntyre round out the top five.

The winner will receive 500 FedEx Cup points and a $1.62 million share of the $9 million purse.

One of five courses at PGA National, the Champion Course hosts the Honda Classic every year. Originally designed by Tom and George Fazio for tournament play, Jack Nicklaus redesigned the course in 2014, creating the infamous three-hole stretch aptly named “The Bear Trap.” Routinely one of the toughest courses on Tour, The Champion is a true ball-striking test.
