Of all the questionable decisions US captain Brandt Snedeker made at the Presidents Cup this past weekend at Medinah, perhaps none were as puzzling as sitting Scottie Scheffler in the Saturday afternoon foursomes session. Trailing by three after a strong morning Four ball session in which Scheffler and his partner, Sam Burns, earned a full point, you’d think Sneds would have wanted the World No. 1 back out there in foursomes.
Instead, Scheffler sat, and the US was only able to split the session. Not much reason was offered beyond Snedeker saying Scheffler had the weight of the world on his shoulders, and it was time for the U.S. team to carry him for a session. Snedeker did also add he could use some rest ahead of Sunday singles.
That strategy proved to work, as Scheffler dominated his singles match and helped the U.S. come back to win. But we never really heard Scheffler’s feelings on being, quite literally, benched. NBC reporter Cara Banks asked him about it after his singles victory over Nico Echavarria, and Scheffler wasn’t having it.
“I mean, do you want to talk about today’s match?” Scheffler responded. “I just played some golf out there, do you want to talk about that?”
