1. What’s a wedge without spin? There’s spin and then there’s the right amount of spin. Callaway achieves the latter through a pair of technologies. The first is a two-piece design with a pocket low in the head that redistributes mass higher, thus raising the centre of gravity to promote a lower, more penetrating flight. The result is more spin but with the kind of control needed to flight shots or attack tight pins.
The grooves received attention as well with a Callaway’s team incorporating a new 17-degree groove angle and tighter pitch spacing to engage more groove-edge contact. That produces more consistent spin across a variety of lies. The grooves combine with a deep, cross-hatch laser pattern across the face to generate friction for more Rottweiler-like bite.

2. Tour approved. The game’s best have already taken to Callaway’s newest wedge, with 32 players using Opus SP at the Genesis Scottish Open and 34 at the Wyndham Championship.
Among those putting it in play were two-time major champions Xander Schauffele and Jon Rahm along with our own Min Woo Lee, Akshay Bhatia, Thomas Detry, Rasmus Hojgaard and Nicolai Hojgaard.
3. Grind it out. There is no shortage of options with the new line. Lofts range from 48 to 64 degrees in two-degree increments in two finishes: black shadow and brushed chrome. There are five grind options available as well, the S, T, C, W and the new X Grind that’s back by popular demand. The X grind (available in the 54, 56, 58 and 60-degree models) boasts a higher bounce for better shot-making capabilities.
