It was a wild week at Royal Birkdale, but the craziest story from the 2026 British Open wound up taking place the day after at Manchester Airport.
In the moments after Ryan Fox’s dramatic win, cameras caught him talking on the phone to his family. It was a beautiful scene, but it also showed the 39-year-old being brought back to reality when asked by his wife about when exactly he’d be getting back home.

Well, it turns out he got out on an early flight the following morning. And freelance golf photographer Matt Hahn snapped a few photos of Fox toting around his new prized possession in a case.

But here’s where the story gets crazy. According to Hahn, those recognising the 39-year-old New Zealander began talking to him about his clutch finish, and the affable Fox was happy to talk about it. All good stuff except for the guy who happened to be sitting in the seat right in front of him.
That’s right, Cameron Young. The guy whose heart Fox had ripped out hours before. Here’s how Hahn tells it:
