While it doesn’t enjoy the spotlight of your Pine Valleys and Pebble Beaches, Baltusrol Golf Club is synonymous with Major championship golf.

Sitting at the base of Baltusrol Mountain in northern New Jersey, just a stone’s throw from New York City, it’s one of A.W. Tillinghast’s finest pieces of work.

Some will remember Baltusrol’s Lower course as the site of two of Jack Nicklaus’ US Open triumphs, while Phil Mickelson’s finish at the 2005 US PGA Championship should ring a few bells.

The course is noted for rewarding well-played shots but delivering swift punishment to those that are not. With a rich heritage that dates back to 1895, Baltusrol is widely regarded as one of America’s premier golf clubs with its two championship courses, the Lower and Upper, having hosted 16 Major championships between them, including seven US Opens and soon-to-be two US PGA Championships when the 98th edition of the tournament won by Jason Day last year returns a month ahead of schedule due to the Rio Olympics’ August programming.

“I shall always count Baltusrol among my favourite courses,” says Nicklaus. “It is certainly one of the finest in the world.”

You can catch all the action of the 2016 US PGA Championship live on Fox Sports from July 29 – August 1.
