There’s certainly room to improve for Justin Thomas coming out of 2023. He finished 71st in the FedEx Cup standings and was off by his standards. Well, now’s the chance as JT will make his 2024 debut at The American Express, a tournament he last played in 2015 with a seventh-place finish.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler also will be flying out to the West Coast for the tournament, which is spread over three courses: PGA West’s Pete Dye Stadium Course, PGA West’s Nicklaus Tournament Course and La Quinta Country Club. Scheffler has three top-25 results at The Amex, including a third-place finish in 2020. We’re also set to see Shane Lowry, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Tom Kim, Chris Kirk, Grayson Murray, Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler and Daniel Berger.
Berger’s appearance is particularly notable considering it is his first start on tour since missing the cut at the 2022 U.S. Open. A back injury, more specifically a slight bulge in a lower disc and deep bone sensitivity, sidelined him for quite some time. He was No. 25 in the World Ranking the last time he played on tour; he’s now No. 634.

Last year’s winner, Jon Rahm, will not be defending his title, because of … reasons. He bested then-rookie Davis Thompson by one shot.
The winner will receive 500 FedEx Cup points and a $1.512 million share of the $8.4 million purse.

Originally private, the Stadium Course (the original 18 at PGA West) was among the rota of courses for the old Bob Hope Desert Classic until some pros, objecting to its difficulty, petitioned to remove it. (It’s now back.) It’s Pete Dye at his rambunctious best, with a finish mimicking his later design at TPC Sawgrass: a gambling par-5 16th (called San Andreas Fault), a short par-3 17th to an island green and an intimidating par-4 18th with water all the way to the green. Though hideous in its difficulty and aesthetics by 1980s standards (it was can’t miss television when it hosted the 1987 Skins Game), it’s matured into a noble piece of architecture that represents the tail end of Dye’s extreme middle phase.
