South Korean superstar Ben An probably thought he used all his luck in the opening round of the 2018 Emirates Australian Open at The Lakes golf Club in Sydney.

After firing a five-under 67 on Thursday morning and narrowly avoiding the inclement weather that wreaked havoc on the afternoon field, An was greeted by more sunshine on day two. But the sunshine came with an added rainbow on the par-3 15th, as An stepped up and played the perfect tee shot, following his caddie’s advice and cutting a 7-iron into the 180-metre hole before his ball disappeared into the cup.

“I can’t remember the yardage, but (my caddie) told me to take five yards off, so I hit a little soft cut in there,” recalls An. “I hit it good, everything was perfect. It was nice fading from the left to the hole and went in.”

The ace propelled An into the outright lead for a second time at 8-under, where he stayed for the remainder of the day before Max McCardle drew level after a stunning round of 6-under 66.

An confirmed it was his third career hole-in-one but this one was extra special.

“It’s the first one with a prize,” he grinned. That prize? A $17,000 Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre watch.

With timing like that, this might just be An’s week.
