CROMVOIRT, Netherlands—The successful pairing of World No. 1 Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz in the Solheim Cup finally has a blemish.
Swedes Maja Stark and Linn Grant were making putts from all over the place, and Stark had a hole-out eagle to take down Korda and Corpuz, 3 and 2, in the first foursomes match of the day on Saturday. Stark and Grant played the equivalent of six under, never making a bogey.
“They just played really well,” Korda said. “I think they were, like, 6 or 5 under through eight holes. So, it’s tough. Alternate shot is hard enough, but when you’re playing against a group of girls that are playing really, really well, it’s even harder.”
Korda and Corpuz had made history on Friday as the first tandem to go 5-0-0 in the Solheim Cup when they beat Charley Hull and Lottie Woad, 4 and 3, in foursomes. They didn’t play in the fourball match Friday evening and were back together again Saturday morning for their first loss together.
While they were bound to fall at some point, the timing of the loss didn’t help the Americans, who dropped three of four matches in the Saturday morning session and find themselves trailing 7-5 heading into Saturday afternoon fourball.
