The LPGA returns to Mexico for the first time since 2017, playing this week at the Mexico Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba. Mexican star Lorena Ochoa, a hostess this week, retired 15 years ago, and was the best player in the world at one point for 158 consecutive weeks. She’s thrilled to see there are eight Mexican players in the field this week that’s competing for $2.5 million, with the winner taking home $375,000 for a victory.
“I was fortunate enough to meet her at a young age. We had a good relationship since I was like 10 or 11,” said Mexico’s Maria Fassi. “It was cool being able to pick up the phone and ask her a question. I hope that she knows that she’s the reason why the eight of us are here”.
Gaby Lopez, at 58th, is the highest ranked Mexican player at Mayakoba.
This event comes a week after a week off for the LPGA. Next week is the U.S. Women’s Open at Erin Hills, followed by two more events before the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco.
