The PGA Tour and LPGA are dark this week—the PGA’s playoffs just ended and the LPGA getting ready for upcoming Solheim Cup. But there’s still a compelling golf competition for fans to make time for this weekend. The 51st Walker Cup pits the best amateur golfers in the U.S. against their peers from Great Britain & Ireland, and it’s coming to a highly celebrated course for the first time.
Lahinch Golf Club is ranked No. 22 on Golf Digest’s World 100 Greatest Courses list, and is No. 2 in Ireland only to Ballybunion. While the course is a bucket list destination for many buddies trips, seeing elite golfers compete on the stage is a rarity.

Considered by some to be the St. Andrews of Ireland, the splendid links at Lahinch reflects evolution in golf architecture. After Alister MacKenzie remodeled it in the 1920s, only a few of Old Tom Morris’ original holes, like the Klondyke par-5 fourth, and Dell par-3 fifth, both with hidden greens, remained. In the 1980s, Donald Steel altered some of MacKenzie’s holes and in the 2000s Martin Hawtree rebuilt everything and added four new holes. One classic MacKenzie par 3, the old 13th, is now a bye hole. That’s what makes Golf Channel’s broadcast of the event so special. Frequently when the Walker Cup is contested overseas, coverage gets spotty in the U.S. Not this year, as the cable network will have extended coverage of the two-day affair, beginning with match preview programming on Thursday and Friday before live coverage of Saturday and Sunday’s double sessions.
Here’s what’s in store. We know it’s Labor Day weekend, but you also should consider a little couch time Saturday and Sunday mornings.
