What makes this particularly risky isn’t the fact that Young is in the final pairing on Sunday, tied with Rory McIlroy at 11-under. Nor is it the fact the Young may have finally learned how to win the “big one” at the Players Championship last month. It’s that the bettor stands to win just $35,266 and lose $100,372 on what roughly amounts to a coin flip. The give doesn’t seem to be worth the take, and even if the bet proves to be correct, Sunday is bound to be an unpleasant sweat instead of leisurely stroll for this courageous soul.
There’s something to be said for conviction of course, but there’s a fine line between brave and dumb and this is straddling it. We see the logic, of course. With four former major winners in the top-five to start the day, it’s not hard to imagine the winner coming from that pack. But Young was the hottest player on the course on Saturday, making eight birdies en route to a third-round 65. If he’s even half as sharp on Sunday, this bettor’s wallet will be a heck of a lot lighter come sunset.
