Oh Robert Allenby, where art thou?
On Twitter, that’s where. A week after the controversial Aussie was arrested for disorderly conduct and trespass outside an Illinois casino in the early hours of Saturday morning, the troubled US PGA Tour veteran has come out swinging in the digital world against, wait for it, a fellow Australian tour pro.
Web.com Tour player Aron Price [below] took to Twitter tonight in a friendly swipe at Allenby’s recent off-course discretions and it proved too tempting for Allenby to ignore.
This is the tweet that apparently started it all, Price comically linking Allenby’s recent off course antics with those of American Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte, who made headlines for his behaviour in Rio this week:
What followed next was nothing short of gobsmacking – the golf world getting a front-row seat to an escalating social media stoush that even included threats of violence.
So far, so good for Allenby. Showing great restraint. Let’s fast forward a little:
Ouch! Allenby delivers his first major (digital) low blow – do you still play golf?
Both men retreat to their respective corners for some water.
DING! Round two.
Wait, what was that? “See you soon face to face”. Surely that’s an official warning, referee?
Well, this is getting out of hand. Allenby has actually put up his digital dukes!
But Price isn’t backing down:
One senses this could be a dream pairing for this year’s Aussie summer of golf … Forget the Triple Crown, the crowd want to see Aussie golf’s bantamweight two-ball go toe-to-toe.
And here comes Price again – WHACK!
DING! That’s it. Now for the judges’ decision:
BY UNANIMOUS DECISION: Both men should lay off Twitter for a while!
But we can’t finish our coverage without revealing the promotional poster for the Allenby VS Price rematch:
