This weekend, the Walker Cup returns to the hallowed bluffs of Cypress Point Golf Club for the first time in 44 years. In that time, the competition, which pits the best men’s amateurs from the United States against the best from the United Kingdom and Ireland, has visited many iconic tracks. Pine Valley in 1985, Royal County Down in 2007, Los Angeles Country Club in 2017 and the Old Course at St. Andrews in 2023, just to name a few. Clearly, the Walker Cup hasn’t been lacked beautiful backdrops or historical import, but the return to Cypress Point—Golf Digest’s third-ranked golf course in America behind only Pine Valley and Augusta National—feels special.
How long as it really been, though? How historic is it? Words can only paint so much of the picture, but thankfully an intrepid X user unearthed this incredible footage from ABC’s flyover intro for the 1981 Walker Cup at Cypress Point, which goes a long way in answering those questions. Dig in.

The footage is grainy and a touch shaky by today’s standards—believe it or not, they didn’t have drones back then, kids—but it’s still an incredible look at Cypress Point’s unrivaled setting, which remains immune to time. Some may debate that Allister MacKenzie’s design isn’t quite as timeless, especially when faced with the advancements of modern golf, but one look at the iconic clubhouse, windswept cypress trees and crashing waves washes all those concerns away.
The Walker Cup will move on to other pastures through at least 2044, so if you’d like to experience the spectacle for yourself, in high definition no less, coverage begins Saturday, September 6th at 12:30 p.m. ET on Peacock.
