A holed pitch shot for birdie from 30 yards was the highlight of Tiger Woods’ second round as he moved into weekend contention at the US PGA Tour’s Quicken Loans National in Maryland.

Woods carded a 5-under-par 65 at TPC Potomac which left him at five-under-par and four shots back of clubhouse leader Beau Hossler (66) at nine under, with play still underway.

Marc Leishman carded a second straight 67 to be the leading Australian at six under.

The 14-time major winner Woods’ round was kickstarted when, after a three-putt bogey at 17, Woods missed the 18th green short right but fired his wedge into the hole for birdie.

Woods made the turn in two under and made three more birdies in the next five holes.

He was also remarkably better on the greens than Thursday’s opening 70, with Woods draining 122 feet, 5 inches of putts on Friday.

Woods put a TaylorMade mallet putter in the bag for the Quicken Loans.
