Tyrrell Hatton is a golfer known for his… volatile temperament. Over the years, the LIV Golf pro has become renowned for his fiery attitude, steely demeanour and course insults after bad rounds. And it’s not like this is speaking out of school. Hatton would say the same thing and admitted on Saturday that he has “a head off” whenever he plays.

Which is what makes J.J. Spaun’s 64-foot, walk-off putt so magical. It didn’t just win the US Open and change the 34-year-old’s life forever; it got a full grin out of Hatton looking on during a perfectly timed press conference.

“He’s holed it,” Hatton exclaimed while watching the US Open finale. “Unbelievable. What a putt to win. That’s incredible. Fair play.

“I’m sad about how I finished. But I’m very happy for J.J. to win a major in that fashion is amazing. I would hate for anyone to have any negativity towards that.”

Hatton had plenty of reason to be upset, too, bogeying the short par-3 17 after a few botched shots, effectively taking him out of contention. There were quite a few club slams, a furious towel grab and (we can safely assume) a curse word or two. A T-4 finish is far from disastrous, but we’re not going to be the ones to tell Hatton that.

And yet, Hatton had to put his missed major chance behind him, at least for a moment, to properly marvel at one of the more impressive putts in major history. It sounds like we have a new scale on how remarkable a shot is: How big a smile does it get out of Tyrrell Hatton?
