JJ Spaun took home the biggest payday of his career via a breakthrough, dramatic maiden major title at the US Open at Oakmont. The Californian was awarded a whopping $US4.3 million ($A6.6 million) winner’s prize when he defeated Bob MacIntyre by two shots.

On the other end of the leaderboard, a fascinating insight into the costs/profit for a player competing in the US Open was given by Korn Ferry Tour pro James Nicholas. He made it through regional and final qualifying for the American national championship and then was T-6 after round one, made the cut and finished T-61 at 19-over-par, 20 shots back of Spaun.
For his efforts, Nicholas was awarded $US43,887 ($A67,000). But what did it cost to be at Oakmont?
