The U.S. Open is returning to the sand hills of North Carolina, this summer with Pinehurst No. 2 hosting the 156-player field that will be competing in the 124th playing of the championship. The 2024 U.S. Open takes place at this USGA anchor site June 13-16, with all interest players required to sign up via online entry by 5 p.m. EDT April 10 (you can submit them here). This is the fourth time the historic Donald Ross course is holding the U.S. Open, with previous winners being Payne Stewart (1999), Michael Campbell (2005) and Martin Kaymer (2014). Pinehurst, dubbed the cradle of American golf, has also held several other USGA championships and has already been named site for the 2029, 2035, 2041 and 2047.

For the past 11 years, the USGA has received more than 9,000. To be eligible, a player must have a Handicap Index of 0.4 or lower, or be a professional.

To date, 53 golfers have earned full exemptions into the field at Pinehurst, led by defending champion Wyndham Clark. In February, the USGA outlined the 23 fully exempt categories for this year’s U.S. Open.

In 2010, a team lead by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw killed and ripped out all the Bermudagrass rough on Pinehurst No. 2 that had been foolishly planted in the 1970s. Between fairways and tree lines, they established vast bands of native hardpan sand dotted with clumps of wiregrass and scattered pine needles. They reduced the irrigation to mere single rows in fairways to prevent grass from ever returning to the new sandy wastelands. Playing firm and fast, it was wildly successful as the site of the 2014 Men’s and Women’s U.S. Opens, played on consecutive weeks. Because of its water reduction, the course was named a Green Star environmental award-winner by Golf Digest that year. In 2019, Pinehurst No. 2 and No. 4 hosted another U.S. Amateur Championship, and the USGA announced Pinehurst No. 2—in addition to hosting the 2024 U.S. Open—will also have the 2029, 2035, 2041 and 2047 U.S. Opens. The number of fully exempt players will increase with the inclusion of the top-60 point leaders and ties not already in the field from the World Ranking, as of May 20 and June 10. The winner of the Masters and PGA Championship, and any multiple winners of PGA Tour events that award a full-point allocation for the season-ending Tour Championship also will earn exemptions. A new exemption category created in 2023 also awards a spot in the U.S. Open field for the college golfer who wins the NCAA individual championship in June.

The remaining spots in the field will be filled by golfers who play their way into the championship via local and final qualifying.

There are 109 courses hosting 18-hole local qualifiers that will be contested in 44 states and Canada from April 22 to May 20. Those who advance then tee it up in one of 13 36-hole final qualifiers, 10 in the U.S., one in England (May 20), one in Canada (June 3) and one in Japan (May 20). Nine of the 10 conducted in the U.S. sites will be played on Monday, June 3, with one additionally American qualifier being played Monday, May 20.

Just two golfers—Ken Venturi (1964) and Orville Moody (1969) have won the U.S. Open after qualifying through local and sectional play. Gene Littler (1961), Boros (1963), Jerry Pate (1976), Steve Jones (1996), Michael Campbell (2005) and Lucas Glover (2009) won after advancing through final qualifying.
