The par-3 third at Narooma might be one of the most photographed holes in Australian golf, although don’t dismiss the course in the quiet southern New South Wales town as having a singular reason to visit. The whole course, designed by the late John Spencer, is a veritable visual sensation as it weaves its way from coastal stunners to heavily wooded holes. There’s even a touch of the Melbourne Sandbelt in places. So while ‘Hogan’s Hole’ and the giant chasm between tee and green gets all the plaudits and camera-lens attention, the multi-dimensional layout continues to endure as one of the best in regional Australia for numerous reasons.
The coastal site is exposed early and sheltered late, such a contrast in settings giving the layout dual appeal. Before the famous third is the roller-coaster second, which is arguably a better hole. Their exceptional location – where misses to the left can literally miss the country – makes for a thrilling start to the round. But the excursion takes a twist after the seventh hole when the course ventures inland to an undulating section that’s part heathland, part bushland. A final foray along the coastline at the crescent-shaped 18th gives the heartbeat a last-hole jolt.
