The DP World Tour’s inaugural Nexo Championship is being held this week at the brand-new Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen, Scotland. And it was very windy on Friday. We mention all of this because we want to give Connor Syme as much of an excuse as possible for his wild putt on the opening hole of Friday’s second round. Emphasis on wild.

When we say, “You have to see this to believe it,” we are not exaggerating in the slightest. This has to be the most misjudged putt in golf history. Especially by a DP World Tour winner.

OK, let’s set the stage. Syme was over the green on the par-5 first in three when he used his putter from what the tour’s app says was 18 yards. So a 60-foot putt from off the green. Pretty common for links golf. What’s not common is where Syme’s golf ball wound up.

The 30-year-old Scot crushed the putt and it ran past the pin, off the other side of the green and down the fairway. In total, it went 65 YARDS, leaving him with 47 yards for his next shot. So, yeah, he missed a putt by about 150 feet. Have a look:

We told you that you had to see it to believe it.

Syme wound up making a triple-bogey eight, shooting 79 and missing the cut. But to his credit, he talked to the media after—and explained what happened on that putt. Well, tried to explain, at least.

“In these conditions, if you get above the hole, it’s so difficult,” Syme told reporters after. “The way the putt was, it was up a hill and then very much down, so I just had a little too much pace on the ball and I got a gust at the same time and there’s just nothing to stop it when it’s going downhill, downwind.”

Obviously, it must have been hard. This guy won the KLM Open just a couple months ago! But . . . still . . .

“Not exactly how you want to start your day,” Syme added with a smile.

Nailed it, Connor. Just like you nailed that putt. Sorry, couldn’t resist.
