US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley had the bulk of his team (10 players) in the field at the Procore Championship to get ready for the upcoming Ryder Cup. Among those all-in on the idea was world No.1 Scottie Scheffler, who remarked early in the week that “I’m always focused on my preparation, that’s most important to me. So in order to stay sharp – you can practise and do all you can at home – there’s something different about playing competition, getting ready for a tournament and I think this will be good prep.”

Good prep and good for the bank account as Scheffler added another win – his first in California – to his résumé. Scheffler held off fellow Ryder Cupper Ben Griffin down the stretch to head to Bethpage in fine form.

The 14th hole of Silverado Resort’s North course proved a key turning point as Scheffler made a six-and-a-half-foot putt for par to remain knotted with Griffin, who then missed from six feet to hand the lead to Scheffler. Scheffler then birdied the par-5 15th to extend the lead to two, an important margin as Griffin missed a putt to tie at the last.

Scheffler’s tee-to-green game was impeccable as he ranked first in strokes gained/off the tee, third in driving accuracy, ninth in driving distance and second in strokes gained/approach.

Scheffler uses a custom Qi10 “Dot” version of TaylorMade’s Qi10 driver – a tour-only option with lower spin rates in the standard head profile – and pairs it with a Fujikura Ventus Black 7X shaft. Interestingly, he uses no “hot melt” inside the head to adjust sound or weight.

“He wants zero hot melt in the head,” TaylorMade tour rep Adrian Rietveld recently told Golf Digest’s Jonathan Wall. “Zero. It’s actually nice to have a fraction of hot melt in the head because it does catch bits of debris in the internal cavity as the club’s going through its lifespan. But yeah, there’s no hot melt that I know of. He’s got a good view on it, right? If [the head] can’t be replicated, he doesn’t want it.”

Given Scheffler’s results with the club, he’d be crazy to think about it any other way.
