Rory McIlroy returned to Scotland looking to defend his title at the Genesis Scottish Open, while also looking to shake off the disappointment of his U.S. Open finish last month, playing for the first time since finishing second place to Bryson DeChambeau at Pinehurst No. 2.

This is the third year that the PGA Tour and DP World Tour have co-sanctioned the event at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland, with 75 players from each tour making up the field. They’re playing for a $9 million overall purse, with the winner taking home $1.62 million for his victory on Sunday.

A year ago, McIlroy birdied the last two holes to top Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre by a shot, with MacIntyre looking to win his beloved home open. A plaque was created for this year on the 18th fairway to commemorate McIlroy’s approach into the 72nd hole when he hit a 2-iron from 202 yards into a nasty wind to 10 feet to get up the winning birdie.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler opted to pass on playing this week and will return next week for the British Open at Royal Troon.

PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele is in action, looking to continue his great season that has produced 11 top-10 finishes in 16 events. Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark, Collin Morikawa and Victor Hovland are the other top-10 players in the field.

Last week’s winner of the John Deere Classic, Davis Thompson, is in action after collecting three straight top-10 finishes.
