The summer of Stanford continued overnight when a third member of the Cardinal women’s team captured a big tournament title.

LPGA TOUR: Nelly Korda won 7 times last year and hasn’t lifted a trophy in 2025 despite similar stats. How is that possible?

Paula Martin Sampedro, a ‘junior’ at Stanford University in California, won the Women’s British Amateur and the European Ladies’ Amateur then Stanford ‘senior’ Megha Ganne dominated the US Women’s Amateur just two weeks ago at Bandon Dunes.

This time, in her native Sweden, sophomore Meja Ortengren captured the Hills Open at Hills Golf & Sports Club on the Ladies European Tour. She’s the third amateur to win on the tour since 2022 and the second to do it this year, after Lottie Woad’s victory at the Irish Women’s Open in July.

Ortengren, 20, opened with 68-69 in the first two rounds and was cruising early on the final day with birdies on holes three, four and seven. But she hit a difficult stretch at the end while trying to close out the tournament. She held a four-shot lead with five holes remaining, but made bogeys on the 14th and 15th, then made a double bogey on the par-4 17th hole. A birdie on the last hole gave her a one-under 70 and a six-under total for the week, two ahead of fellow Swede Lisa Pettersson and Germany’s Leonie Harm.

“I don’t even know where to start,” Ortengren said. “I’m lost for words. I’m very happy to get the win and happy that the round is over.”

Ortengren, ranked eighth in the Women’s World Amateur Ranking, was named Freshman of the Year for Stanford’s new conference, the ACC. She posted a 70.11 scoring average, finished at par or better in 24 or 28 rounds and won her first college tournament, the San Diego State Classic.
