Scottie Scheffler is trying to become the first golfer to repeat at the Memorial since Tiger Woods went back-to-back-to-back from 1999 to 2001. The World No. 1 has been on a tear lately with two wins, a T-2, two T-4s and a terrible T-8 in his last six starts, and yet the newly minted PGA Championship winner has his work cut out for him. He’ll have to outdo a loaded field that features eight of the top 10 golfers in the world.

Rory McIlroy is missing the Jack Nicklaus-hosted event, but Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas, Ludvig Åberg, Hideki Matsuyama, Russell Henley and Sepp Straka are nothing to sneeze at. Other high profile players including Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler will be teeing it up as well at Muirfield Village, along with Patrick Cantlay, who has won this event twice.

This is the course that Jack built, and rebuilt, and rebuilt again and again. Since its opening in 1974, Jack Nicklaus has remodeled every hole at Muirfield Village, some more than once, using play at the PGA Tour’s annual Memorial Tournament for some guidance.

Last year’s victory was Scheffler’s fifth of his remarkable seven-win 2024 campaign. Even with a two-over final round, Scheffler held off Morikawa by one stroke, needing a five-footer for par on the 72nd hole. Only six players broke par on Sunday with an average score of 75.

This week’s winner will receive 700 FedEx Cup points and a $4 million cut of the $20 million purse in this signature event.
