Jordan Spieth equaled the best score of his PGA Tour career, a 62 in the final round of the CJ Cup Byron Nelson on Sunday, 11 days before he resumes his quest to complete a career grand slam at the PGA Championship. Spieth, 31, will be making his ninth attempt at completing the grand slam, at the Quail Hollow Club, a month after Rory McIlroy completed his own grand slam by winning the Masters. “Not only did he complete it, but the time it took to complete it, it was obviously a very challenging week for him,” Spieth said. “It was harder maybe than anybody ever trying to win a Masters, and to be that far from his most recent major [victory] as well, and then to go do it, it was very inspiring. “And Quail Hollow, it’s a Bermuda golf course which I love. I grew up on Bermuda. Got to play realty fast greens. My ball striking is coming around at a really nice time. I felt like I’ve been progressing each week since the surgery.” Spieth underwent surgery on his left wrist last August, ending his season and delaying the start of a new season until February. He has now made 10 starts in 2025 and has three top 10s, including a tie for fourth in the WM Phoenix Open and a solo fourth on Sunday at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas. His 62 there included nine birdies and no bogeys, and equaled the score he shot in the second round of the Northern Trust at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, N.J., in August of 2021. “I’ve been putting, actually stroking it really well coming into this week,” Spieth said, “and I didn’t have much go in in Hilton Head. But statistically I’ve been on a really good putting run, and I just kind of got in a lull for what seemed to be Hilton Head and the off week even into the first few days here. Luckily today seemed to get out of it. “It wasn’t just making birdie putts. It was the constant three to four-footers for par that just felt a little bit easier than they did earlier in the week. Just had a couple go in.” Spieth will have on more start before the PGA Championship, at the Truist Championship at the Philadelphia Cricket Club beginning on Thursday.
