There are two types of golfers: The equipment nerds and those that will one day become equipment nerds.

Much like life and death, it’s an inevitable cycle, one that can’t be cheated, skirted or conquered. One day, the gear itch will come for all of us, and when it does, we awill be powerless to resist it.

But don’t take our word for it, just ask Hideki Matsuyama. You might not get much out of the famously tight-lipped Masters champion, but as Smylie Kaufman revealed on this week’s episode of ‘The Smylie Show’ podcast, Matsuyama is one of golf’s greatest tinkerers.

The Japanese PGA Tour pro is willing to turn over every stone in search of the perfect loadout, as evidenced by his, ahem, robust collection of Scotty Cameron putters. According to Brad Faxon, who recently played a round with the famed putter brand’s namesake, Matsuyama owns “close to 400” Scotty Camerons. No, we didn’t forget a decimal point.

Faxon reportedly asked Matsuyama about his top-secret collection. Matsuyama neither confirmed or denied the report, but this is one tall tale we choose to believe. Heck, Arnold Palmer amassed nearly 10,000 clubs at his Ohio workshop over the course of his life. Compared to that, a couple hundred putters is barely a drop in the bucket. Here’s hoping that one day we get to see Matsuyama’s treasure trove (share the wealth, Hideki!), but for now we’re happy to trust the word of the putter god himself.
