The stars are out in L.A., and none shine brighter than Tiger Woods, who is playing in his first PGA Tour event since withdrawing from the Masters 10 months ago.
Sure, we saw him at the Hero World Challenge and the PNC Championship late last year, but this time it counts as the Genesis Invitational is the PGA Tour’s third signature event of the year. That means that the 70-player field is competing for a $20 million purse, with $4 million going to the champion.
It was a busy week for Woods before he even struck a competitive golf shot as he’s host of the tournament at Riviera Country Club and he launched a new logo and apparel brand, Sun Day Red. On Wednesday, he played in the pro-am with Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.
The rest of the field is stacked too, as nine of the top-10 players in the world are in action, including Nos. 1 and 2, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. Only LIV Golf’s Jon Rahm, the 2023 Genesis champion, is missing.
An oddity this week—there is a cut even though there are only 70 players in the field. It’s been reported that three tournaments hosted by the biggest names in golf history—Woods’ Genesis, the late Arnold Palmer’s Invitational at Bay Hill and Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Tournament—each pushed to have a cut. The PGA Tour agreed and after 36-hole the field will be cut to the top 50 players and ties and anyone within 10 shots of the leader. It’s possible only a few players will not play the weekend. (You can read more about it from our Tod Leonard here.)
