The regular season for LIV Golf ends this week in Indiana, as the league has reached its 13th tournament of the season at the Club at Chatham Hills outside Indianapolis. Next week is the team championship in Michigan, so all the individual standings this week are final.
For starters, the usual field is playing for the $20 million purse, with the winner taking home $4 million for the victory.
Joaquin Niemann and Jon Rahm are the only two men who have a chance to win the season title, with Niemann holding a 58.7 percent chance of winning the title after winning five events this season. Rahm hasn’t won an event but still, somehow, has a 41.3 percent chance. He needs Niemann to play poorly to have a chance to win with too many different scenarios to mention here.
On the team side, seedings will be finalized after this week for next week’s championship. Rahm’s Legion XIII has the top seed wrapped up with Bryson DeChambeau’s Crushers and Sergio Garcia’s Fireballs in a close race for the second spot.
Now, the more interesting, and complicated, matters. Lock Zone, Open Zone and Drop Zone spots are all solidified this week too. The top 24 spots (Lock Zone) are guaranteed a contract the next season, those from 25-48 (Open Zone) can say in the league but their current team is under no obligation to keep them if there’s an expiring contract and those 49 and below (Drop Zone) will be relegated but will also have an opportunity to earn their spot back later.
Most of the focus, of course, will be on the Drop Zone. Lee Westwood and Henrik Stenson are Nos. 47 and 48 respectively, the first two positions in front of the DZ. The seven in the zone have some notables: Mito Pereira (49), Andy Ogletree (50), Luis Masaveu (51), Ian Poulter (52), Yubin Jang (53), Anthony Kim (54) and Frederik Kjettrup (55).
Westwood, Stenson and Poulter are all members of the Majesticks team, so there is a legitimate chance that three men from the same squad enter into relegation.
Those who end in the Drop Zone can earn their position back into LIV Golf by winning an event on the Asian Tour’s International Series or finishing in one of the top spots in a 72-hole stroke play tournament, called LIV Golf Promotions.
Here’s the rundown of what each player will earn this week in Indiana. Check back here Sunday after play is complete for updates.
