The playoffs are upon us and the first leg is this week at the typically steamy FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind. The top 70 in FedEx Cup points are playing for the $20 million purse with the winner taking home $3.6 million.
Well, the top 70? Actually, it’s the top 69 as No. 2 Rory McIlroy is the only player among the group who declined to play. Everyone else is here, starting with World No. 1 by a mile, Scottie Scheffler. Doesn’t seem like all that long ago when McIlroy was sitting on three PGA Tour wins for the year and Scheffler had none.
A little more than three months later and Scheffler is sitting on two more majors and four total wins to head into the playoffs on top. He earned $18 million last week for topping the regular season list. Hideki Matsuyama is the defending champion, looking to become the first to win back-to-back here since Daniel Berger in 2016-17, although then it wasn’t a playoff event.
All the other heavy hitters are playing, including Nos. 3-10 in the rankings: Sepp Straka, Russell Henley, Justin Thomas, Ben Griffin, Harris English, J.J. Spaun, Tommy Fleetwood and Keegan Bradley. The top 50 after this week advance to the BMW Championship next week at Caves Valley in Maryland. Also, the top 50 after this week will automatically qualify for all eight signature events in 2026. Jordan Spieth is 48th, Wyndham Clark is 49th and Min Woo Lee is 50th.
Then there’s the Ryder Cup. The top six in the U.S. standings after next week’s BMW Championship will earn spots in the September matches in New York. Then Captain Keegan Bradley will, of course, get his six picks to round out the squad. For the Europeans, the top six after the British Masters (August 24) will earn spots then Captain Luke Donald will fill out his team with six picks.
Yes, there’s a lot going on this time of year.
