Heading into last week’s Team TaylorMade Invitational, Charlie Woods was the 609th-ranked golfer in the AJGA Boys Rankings. Now, after his impressive first win on the circuit, buoyed by a final-round 66, the 16-year-old rocketed up to No. 14. For those who can’t (or don’t want to) do the math, that’s 595 spots all because of one great weekend.

The three-shot victory has put the younger Woods in pretty prestigious company and will allow him a chance to tee off in a marquee junior  event at the tail-end of August, the Junior Players Championship. The top 58 juniors as of the July 4 cut-off date all get a spot in the tournament, and according to the Florida Times-Union, Woods is locked in after his Streamsong victory.

Because time is a flat circle, Woods and company will be competing at TPC Sawgrass’ Players Stadium Course, a venue in which his father won the Players Championship in 2001 and 2013. We can safely assume that Tiger might have a few pointers and suggestions for Charlie.

Along with TPC Sawgrass, Woods is in position to qualify for a handful of other top-level AJGA events, including this month’s Wyndham Invitational, the Ping Invitational in October and the Rolex Tournament of Champions in November, depending on his play. Woods also is eyeing the chance to play in one of the country’s most prestigious amateur events in taking on Rhode Island’s Wannamoisett Country Club in the elite Northeast Amateur in a few weeks.

You know things are getting noteworthy when Brandel Chamblee weighs in, and the PGA Tour winner turned golf commentator had but one thing to say, “Young Woods looks very good.” The man can keep things brief when he needs to.

The quoted post compared Charlie Woods to “the great Adam Scott,” with other commenters noticing a similar swing. Not a bad comp at all! There’s plenty of room for Woods to grow, but what a start and what a leap for the teenager still figuring it out. As one of the commenters accurately put it, “The kitten does not fall far from the big cat.”
