All golf course junkies know the name Tom Doak. And if you don’t know the man, you certainly know his courses. The 64-year-old has designed some of the top tracks in the world, most notably Te Arai Links (North) in New Zealand, Childress Hall (Doak) in Texas, Punta Brava Golf & Surf Club in Mexico, Ballyneal in Colorado and Pinehurst No. 10 in North Carolina. Now, we’re just a few weeks away from his new “unforgettable” design, Cabot Highlands Old Petty.

Joining Gil Hanse and Mark Parsinen’s Cabot Highlands Castle Stuart, Cabot Highlands Old Petty will join the Cabot Highlands family in North Scotland and looks to feature crisscrossing fairways on the opening and closing holes, à la St Andrews.

“We are so excited to be sharing this first glimpse of Old Petty,” said Ben Cowan-Dewar, CEO and co-founder of Cabot. “From the outset, our vision has been to honour the land and its rich history while crafting an unforgettable golf experience that adds to the reputation of Castle Stuart. Old Petty is a course that will surprise, challenge and inspire, true to the spirit of the Highlands.”

Working with Scottish field-based architect Clyde Johnson and agronomist Chris Haspell, Doak’s design is set to roam through hillsides on a vast property. It will also play past Old Petty Church and Castle Stuart.

The course will use the surrounding Highlands landscape to its advantage from its scenic short par-3 No. 17 to coastal views on No. 10 to its use of the nearby Moray Firth. The original plans for the course included Arnold Palmer and his design firm for his first-ever Scottish course, but that fell apart after he passed away in 2016.

If you’re in the Cabot Highlands area or have some airline points ready to go, the course will open for preview play from August 1st through the end of September. It will be walking-only during this window, with prices at £190, just under $260.
