The Bryson DeChambeau haters must be spinning with glee right now.
It has now been a month-long stretch of Bryson lighting it up early but failing to cash in when it counts. First, he stumbled at LIV Doral, shooting a final-round 75 after beginning Sunday with the lead. Then, he electrified the crowd on Saturday at the Masters, earning a spot in the final group with Rory McIlroy, only to post another 75 to lose by four. In his very next start last week at LIV Golf Mexico, he again led heading into Sunday, only to shoot an even-par 71 to lose to Joaquin Niemann by three. For the DeChambeau detractors, business is booming of late.
On top of all of that, a rogue video clip from DeChambeau’s practice session at Club de Golf Chapultepec last week has hit social media and it shows the two-time US Open champion in a less than flattering light. Well, at least to people who have been praying for him to slip up again after his image rehabilitation in 2024.Â
“Worst f–king bunkers ever,” DeChambeau can be heard saying in a clip shared by perisgolf on Instagram. “The worst.”
DeChambeau, whose bunker play was A+ at Augusta National, was quite literally struggling just advancing the ball out of the hazards in the video. He went on to explain that someone could seriously hurt their wrist based on what he was seeing and feeling:
I’ve been defending Bryson a LOT lately.
But this is embarrassing and reminiscent of the old Bryson. Crying and whining about the bunkers in Mexico. Vulgar as well.
The Bryson haters tell me his transformation is all fake. Maybe some truth there. pic.twitter.com/cFwQ1JZURw

In fairness, this just seems like a legitimate pre-tournament concern and less of a “Look! he’s still an a-hole!” situation like some are already making it out to be on social media. Plus, he still opened with a 63 and finished T-2, so it wasn’t like this was some mid-round excuse. Still, though, any perceived slip-up adds fuel to the narrative that DeChambeau has simply been playing a well-crafted character over the past year-plus in an effort to be loved.
My read that no one asked for? Those bunkers do look pretty bad…
