Golf fans haven’t seen or heard as much of Dustin Johnson since he left the PGA Tour for LIV Golf two years ago. For one thing, LIV doesn’t play as many events. For another, DJ has been a non-factor at the four major championships since then. But after a fantastic 69 on Friday at the Open Championship, Johnson is (kind of) in contention. And after listening to his post-round presser, we’re happy to report it’s the same old DJ.
We’re also happy to report it’s the same old Paulina Gretzky. Johnson’s wife isn’t in Scotland this week—and it doesn’t sound like DJ expects to see her at Royal Troon no matter how well he plays.

Have a look at this funny exchange following Friday’s round in which Dustin answers one reporter as only Dustin can:
Q. Any family members, any friends here for you this week?
DUSTIN JOHNSON: Well, my brother’s here. (DJ’s brother, Austin, is his caddie.)
Q. Yeah, I hope so. If he’s not —
DUSTIN JOHNSON: No, my wife, her and a couple of friends are in Saint-Tropez. I’ll meet her on Sunday.
Q. She doesn’t like this weather?
DUSTIN JOHNSON: I don’t blame her.
No notes. That’s vintage DJ (and Paulina) right there.

And for the record, we don’t blame her, either. As we’ve seen through the years, DJ and Paulina are beach and boat people. And while Royal Troon is right near the Scottish coast, a trip there requires a lot more layers than either of them like wearing.
In any event, if Johnson is somehow able to claim a third major on Sunday, we know where the after party will be.

Is it the British Open or the Open Championship? The name of the final men’s major of the golf season is a subject of continued discussion. The event’s official name, as explained in this op-ed by former R&A chairman Ian Pattinson, is the Open Championship. But since many United States golf fans continue to refer to it as the British Open, and search news around the event accordingly, Golf Digest continues to utilize both names in its coverage.
