Elvis Smylie says he was frustrated to have been struck down with an illness on the eve of the Open Championship but fought to at least have a hope of making the 36-hole cut at Royal Portrush.

The Australian PGA champion carded a solid second round of one-under-par 70 and he sat three-over for the tournament midway through day two of the links major.

At 1pm local time Friday (10pm AEST), the projected cut was two-over but with wind and rain forecast for the afternoon Smylie was hopeful it would drift at least a shot and put him into his first Open Championship weekend.

“I always fight till the end, so I knew that it was going to be a tough grind to be able
to post a good score and potentially make the cut, but I haven’t been feeling a hundred percent
lately,” Smylie said.

“All the emotions are running through my mind right now. I’m proud of the fight, but then again, I’m just a little bit disappointed that I wasn’t able to give a hundred percent. But another major, another big step and just learning how to play in the big stage and what I need to do and constantly keep improving.
So it’s a bit of a waiting game at the moment. So hopefully it blows a lot this afternoon and it’s a
waiting game.”
