Patrick Reed is no stranger to Ryder Cup pressure, and despite his move to LIV Golf, the American remains hopeful of adding a fourth Ryder Cup appearance to his decorated resume. Speaking at LIV Golf Andalucía at Real Club Valderrama, Reed outlined his path back onto the US team ahead of September’s showpiece at Bethpage in New York.
Reed, a three-time Ryder Cup veteran, knows his chances hinge almost entirely on his performance in next week’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush. Currently on the outside of the automatic qualifiers, Reed is targeting a win to catapult him into the top six on the US points list and secure an automatic place.
“It’s a hard one to answer,” Reed said when asked about his Ryder Cup chances. “I think it all comes down to next week at The Open. Obviously play well here, but go ahead and win the Open Championship, and I believe I’d be inside the top six on points, so I think that would lock it in and allow me to be on the team.”
The 2018 Masters champion said a captain’s pick was also an option.
“Really the next couple weeks I have to play some solid golf, go out and contend on Sundays, have a chance to win golf tournaments, and if I do that, then hopefully Keegan [Bradley] picks me,” Reed said. “But at the end of the day, because we only get the majors that have points for the Ryder Cup, it’s an uphill battle. The good thing is I feel like I’m in a good spot right now as long as I go out and play well in the final major.”
Reed, who joined LIV Golf in 2022, has an impressive Ryder Cup record of 7-3-2 from 12 career matches. Nicknamed “Captain America” for his fiery play in past editions, Reed boasts an unbeaten 3-0 singles record in Ryder Cup competition. His most recent Ryder Cup appearance came in 2018, and he was left off the 2021 and 2023 teams.
Reed’s pursuit of another appearance faces the added challenge of LIV Golf players receiving points only from major championships, limiting their opportunities to climb the rankings. Despite that hurdle, Reed is in winning form, having claimed his first LIV Golf title in Dallas last month. A strong showing at Valderrama and Portrush could force US captain Bradley into a decision when selecting his team.
