Yout gotta hand it to Michael Block. Even during a week in which he didn’t have his best stuff, the dude is still a content machine.

The popular club pro who became a golf folk hero at the 2023 PGA Championship missed the cut by 14 shots at this year’s event, but he still enjoyed his time at Quail Hollow. Especially, apparently, when he had a big crowd watching.

“I love crowds,” Block told GOLF.com’s Josh Schrock. “That’s kind of the funny part is I wish there was a huge crowd on every hole because that’s when I hit my shots. I really do. I always do. It’s the weirdest thing. When there’s no one around is when I hit my worst shots.”

Go on . . .

“That’s something that I need more in my life is a bigger crowd. I just need to play a little better so it could happen. I could only imagine what would have happened if I would have been playing really good this week.”

That’s an, um, interesting assessment. But then again, this is a guy who is known to make interesting assessments about his game.

That being said, we love the guy. And he deserves a pass particularly for this week. As he’s noted, he’s not a bomber to begin with. And he’s nearly 49 and playing this beast of a course. And he still provided a couple amazing shots with a 4-iron to five feet to set up birdie on No. 17 on Thursday and a driver off the deck to find the par-5 seventh in two on Friday to set up another bird.

But, still, yesterday’s comments turned some heads. Including PGA Tour pro Ben An, who couldn’t resist a little dig at Block.

Ouch.

On the bright side, Block will get to play in front of more fans at next week’s Charles Schwab Challenge after receiving another sponsor exemption. He just might take some needling from some of the PGA Tour pros there.
