This first-tee announcer deserves to be knighted for working in Senior Open Sunday slopfest

Cold-hearted golf fans enjoyed the challenging seeing players competing in challenging weather conditions during the final round of last week’s Open Championship. But the rain and wind at Royal Liverpool were nothing compared to what the golfers played in during the final round of the Senior Open at Royal Portcrawl in Wales.

From start to finish during the final 18 holes, the breeze were gales, the wetness was constant and merciless, and the scores were well over par. Colin Montgomerie finished the day with an 88, Steven Alker an 81 and Bernhard Langer a 77, to name just a few. The scoring average was just north of 78.5 and the low round was posted by Y.E. Yang and Rob Labritz with even-par 71s. Yang’s jumped him 44 spots to T-11; Labritz improving from an 87 in breezy conditions on Saturday.

Watching players struggle finding fairways and greens proved to be something that not just cold-blooded golf fans enjoyed watching, but so did major-championship winning tour pros.

Before the round began, players were asked about their thoughts and they got ready for the slog. And the responses were, well, something.

All credit to Alex Cejka for hanging on – literally and figuratively – and beating Padraig Harrington in a playoff after shooting a five-over 76 to finish at five-over for the championship. But the guy we truly hope gets some kind of bonus/recognition/hug is first-tee announcer Alister Scott, who worked the final day in this horrible mess.

Scott is the regular first-tee announcer on the DP World Tour, so he’s a pro’s pro. And he proved it on Sunday, bringing the energy and a nice Scottish brogue as he stood sentry and read the names of the 70 golfers who played in this rotten stuff.
