PONTE VEDRA BEACH — Heading to 18 late on Friday, Sam Burns only needed a par to finish at one under overall and make the cut at the Players Championship. Like his good friend Scottie Scheffler, he likely wanted to play boring golf—fairway, green, two putts, and come back for the weekend.

Instead, he hit his drive so far right that it wasn’t clear it would remain on TPC Sawgrass property. That left him deep in the woods, on a bed of pine straw, behind a stand of trees and a hospitality tent, needing a miracle to escape … and a miracle is just what he delivered:

To get over those trees was stunning all on its own, but the crafty chip out of the heavy stuff, landing in basically the only spot it could land, was almost as impressive. Burns finished with a 70 after his Thursday 73, and this weekend he’ll look to improve on his best career finish at the Players, a T-26 showing in 2022.
