Raise your swing speed with this fun drill

In the modern game, speed is king. The faster your clubhead speed, the further a centre-struck shot will travel. It’s that simple.

We want to encourage that search for speed in junior golfers, too. Before we put the driver in their eager hands, however, try this drill to help them understand where we want to generate maximum speed.

Ask them to swing the driver but holding the clubhead, allowing the grip to travel through the area of impact. We are looking to generate that whoosh sound as the grip-end of the club moves past the ball position. Ideally, the noise will come after impact.

It’s a drill any golfer can do and highlights exactly how to sync the swing so that you hit top speed where it matters most.

Quick tip: Stop and go

Starting the downswing before they have finished the backswing is a common trait I see among many amateurs, but there is a simple remedy. Take three practice swings but stop at the top of the backswing, hold for a moment, feel the left side move back towards the target and then swing through. After the third practice swing, step in and hit a ball using the same drill. It’s an effective way to match up the correct sequence in the swing.
