Three drills to improve your game without leaving the house

With kids home from school, relatives visiting for Christmas or a trip with the family, squeezing in golf practice can be tricky during the holiday period. Here are three drills you can do at home to improve your game these holidays.

Make an impact
Ideally, this drill would be done with an impact bag, but you can use a pillow or a duffel bag stuffed with towels and achieve the same result. Place the pillow a foot out in front of where the ball would be placed on the intended target line. Swing through so that the toe of the club impacts the pillow and hold at the 3 o’clock position (for right-handers). This is a really simple and effective way to work on extension and rotation at impact with the clubhead trailing the handle.

Line it up
Use alignment sticks or three one-metre-long rods to create the three-shaft drill. This involves aligning one with your feet, one with the target and a third one for ball position. It is a great way to check that when you are in your stance, those three key positions are all matching.

Make it dynamic
Rather than starting from a static position, we want the golf swing to be a dynamic movement. Before taking a practice swing, push forward onto your left foot, rock back onto your right, push forward onto your left foot again and then swing. That is a very effective way to generate natural dynamics in the golf swing rather than being static.
