Jason Day has a lengthy history of ailments and injuries in his PGA Tour career, so when he sought medical attention during his quarter-finals match against Scottie Scheffler on Saturday afternoon in the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, there was genuine reason for concern.
Golf Channel commentators initially reported while Day was playing the eighth hole at Austin Country Club that he was suffering from vertigo. That has been an issue for the Australian in the past – most notably in the 2015 US Open at Chambers Bay, when he collapsed during the second round. He later revealed he suffered a milder form of dizziness in the Open Championship at St Andrews.
Minutes later, while Day was in the ninth fairway, on-course reporter Notah Begay reported that Day told him he was suffering from allergy symptoms and not vertigo.
A two-time winner of the Match Play, Day forged a 3-up lead over the World No.1 through seven holes by making three birdies and an eagle. But after the report of his ailment, he lost both the eighth and ninth to be only 1 up as they made the turn.
At the eighth hole, Golf Channel showed Day seeking medical advice from a person identified as a PGA Tour physician. When Day completed the hole, it appeared the doctor handed Day something before he made his way to the ninth tee.
