Sure, Tony Finau is the defending champion at the Texas Children’s Houston Open, but the whole week starts and stops with World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who, after taking a week off, is looking to win his third consecutive tournament.
The Texan took home to goods at Arnold Palmer’s place, then backed it up with another winning performance at the Players Championship, pocketing a combined $8.5 million for his efforts. He did not play last week at the Valspar Championship. He also has not finished outside the top 20 in any event this season. If he wins at Memorial Park Golf Course, he’d be the first to win three in a row since Dustin Johnson did it in 2017.
Scheffler, Finau and the field will be competing for a $9.1 million overall purse, with the winner taking home $1.638 million.

Finau has made seven of eight cuts this season and is looking to become the first to defend the Houston Open since Vijay Singh in 2004-05.
Wyndham Clark, ranked No. 4, is the only other top-10 player on hand in Houston, but he tweaked his back in a workout earlier in the week and is not at 100 percent.
Peter Malnati, last week’s Valspar champion, is back in action. Other notables in the field include Will Zalatoris, Sahith Theegala and Jason Day.
Here is the full list of what players who make the cut will earn. Check back here shortly after the tournament is complete on Sunday for updates.
