The PGA Tour has moved back to the mainland for the American Express and it’s the second time in three weeks where the event doesn’t have its defending champion. Yes, like the Sentry at Kapalua two weeks ago, this week Jon Rahm is not in action in La Quinta, Calif., as he joined the LIV Golf League during the offseason.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is playing, however, and has three top-25 finishes in this event. Justin Thomas is making his season debut. Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele are both competing, as are Chris Kirk and Grayson Murray, the first two winners of the year.

Last year, Rahm opened with consecutive 64s, and shot a final-round 68 to defeat Davis Thompson by a shot. Thompson stood over a birdie putt from 40 feet on the 17th hole on Sunday and the putt harshly clanged off the flagstick. He settled for par and a second-place finish.

Schauffele and Kirk tied for third place, two shots behind Rahm.

The three courses used are Pete Dye’s Stadium Course, La Quinta Country Club and the Nicklaus Tournament Course. The winner will take home $1.512 million from an $8.4 million overall purse.

Check back after the tournament is completed on Sunday for updates.
