For the second straight year, Anna Davis was involved in a rules issue at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur.
Davis, who won the event in 2022, missed the 2024 ANWA cut by one shot on Thursday at Champions Retreat, a fate made particularly cruel as Davis was assessed a one-shot penalty for slow play on the 17th hole. Jim Hyler, the tournament rules chairman, confirmed the penalty in a statement. “Anna Davis was assessed a one-stroke penalty for violation of the Tournament’s Pace of Play Policy,” Hyler wrote. “Her group, which included Lottie Woad and Maria Jose Marin, was notified that they were out of position multiple times during their second round. While being timed, Davis received her first bad time after playing her second stroke on hole No. 5 and received her second bad time following her second stroke on hole No. 17. She was subsequently assessed a one-stroke penalty, which was applied on hole No. 17.”
The penalty led to a six-over 78 for Davis and she finished with a four-over two-day total, meaning she won’t get a chance to play Augusta National during the Augusta National Women’s Amateur’s final round on Saturday.
This comes after a bizarre incident in last spring’s ANWA, where Davis received a pair of two-stroke penalties after she lifted, cleaned and replaced her ball while it was in the rough after hitting her drive on the first hole of the first round and after hitting her second-shot approach to the green. According to the Model Local Rule E-3 distributed by the ANWA competition committee, the field of 72 players was only allowed to play preferred lies from the areas cut to the fairway height or less.
