The Payne’s Valley Cup, a four-man made-for-TV exhibition broadcast live on the Golf Channel on Tuesday, was the definition of a hit-and-giggle affair. Tiger Woods, along with pals Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose, were on hand to compete entertain for a few hours while christening the opening of Payne’s Valley Golf Club at Big Cedar Lodge, the first public course in the US designed by Woods.
But the hitting and giggling reached a whole new level jocularity when Justin Rose took the tee on the driveable par-4 third hole and did this.
Actually, before we roll the clip, let’s preface this once more. The US Open, this was not. This was a light-hearted affair where the guys could have fun and joke around and help Tiger christen his new course. But it also had an amazing bit of star power. Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player were watching on the first tee. Dan Hicks, Paul Azinger and David Feherty, NBC/Golf Channel’s A-team announcers, were on the mics. Suffice it to say, no expenses appeared to be spared.

What makes the moment so fun is how quickly everybody was to rake Rose over the coals.
“That’s got to be 150 yards off line,” Thomas said.
And then Azinger chimed in on TV: “This is as bad a shot as Justin Rose will ever hit and he knows it. He can only laugh.”
Best of all, even Rose roasted Rose: “That was not a high cut.”
Nope… but it’s nice to know that even a Major champion can blow one off the planet every now and then.
