A crazy Chris Gotterup stat, an epic match play choke-off and Ben Kohles’ expensive double bogey

With his fifth PGA Tour victory this past Sunday at the John Deere Classic, Chris Gotterup cemented himself as one of the bonafide closers in the sport right now. And if you think that’s hyperbolic, the numbers do not lie:

Winning is as hard as it has ever been in the men’s professional game, which is why stuff like this stands out even more. Gotterup has become a serious player over the last three years, and, at 26 years young, he seems to be just getting started. This week he returns to the Genesis Scottish Open, where he will defend his title, then it’s off to Royal Birkdale for The Open, a tournament he played for the first time in a year ago and posted a solo third. 

Then you have Ben Kohles, a 36-year-old who is a proven winner on the Korn Ferry Tour but has still yet to capture his first PGA Tour win. Sunday at TPC Deere Run was about as close as he’s ever been, then came the 72nd hole, where he made a crushing double bogey not only to spoil his chances at a win, but to (literally) change his fortunes dramaitcally.
