It’s been an eventful week for Phil Mickelson at the American Express event before he even hit his first official shot. First, Phil flexed at his pre-tournament press conference by wearing a Masters mask, and then he put on a show as only he can in a nine-hole charity match. But he wasn’t smiling after what happened to him on his sixth hole of the first round.

After a great bunker shot on the par-5 15th at PGA West’s Nicklaus course set up a three-footer for birdie, Mickelson suffered one of the most brutal lipouts you’ll ever see. Not a 180, not a 360, but a 540-degree slap in the face. Check it out, unless you’re scared it will give you nightmares:

Ouch. Seriously, does that cup know who he is?! It’s Phil Mickelson! A 44-time PGA Tour winner, five-time Major champion, and not to mention this week’s host. Show some freaking respect.

Anyway, the lipout surely stung Mickelson for a bit, but so did the back-to-back bogeys he made on the next two holes. On the bright side, if he misses the cut, it could be a chance to hear more of him in the commentary booth during the weekend.
