Forty-eight of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking are in the field as the PGA Tour holds the 51st edition of the Players Championship, tournament officials revealing the field on Friday afternoon. Leading the charge is World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who a year ago became the golfer ever to repeat as Players Championship winner. He thus arrives at TPC Sawgrass with a chance at an unprecedented three-peat, which would also allow him to join Jack Nicklaus as the only three-time winners of the event.

Seven other past Players champions are competing: Adam Scott, Matt Kuchar, Rickie Fowler, Jason Day, Si Woo Kim, Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas. Scott will be playing in the event for the 24th time, the most of anyone competing. Kuchar will be playing for the 20th time in his career, as will Justin Rose.

Mind you, there is one notable missing past champion: Tiger Woods, a two-time winner of the event who has not played in it, however, since 2019, was one of four eligible players (along with Ernie Els, Alex Noren and Brendon Todd) who did not commit to play. Woods has been competing so far in 2025 in his TGL golf simulator league who acknowledged earlier this week that the recent death of his mother, Tida, and his involvement in the negotiations between the PGA Tour and the Saudi Public Investment Fund, has prevented him from concentrating on a return to action. Woods has not played in an official PGA Tour event since the Open Championship last July at Royal Troon, or since having back surgery in September.

There will be 24 golfers making their debut appearance at the Players, including five tour winners (Brian Campbell, Rafa Campos, Chris Gotterup, Joe Highsmith and Matt McCarty). One other first timer with an interesting storyline is Laurie Canter. The Englishman is a former LIV Golf League member who has since returned to playing the DP World Tour on a full-time basis and has won two times since last summer. That allowed him to move his way into the top 50 in the OWGR and qualify, becoming the first LIV golfer to play in a non-major PGA Tour solo-sanctioned event.

Two more players could qualify for the championship over the weekend, the winner of the Arnold Palmer Championship and the Puerto Rico Open both guaranteed a spot if they’re not otherwise exempt. The last player into the field currently is Bub Cauley (No. 112 on the FedEx Cup points list) with Danny Walker (No. 114) as the first alternate.

Below is the entire 144 player field. Tee times for the first and second rounds at TPC Sawgrass have not yet been released and are expected to go live on Tuesday. We’ll update this post with the officials tee times when they become available.

TPC’s stadium concept was the idea of then-PGA Tour commissioner Deane Beman. The 1980 design was pure Pete Dye, who set out to test the world’s best golfers by mixing demands of distance with target golf. Most greens are ringed by random lumps, bumps and hollows, what Dye calls his “grenade attack architecture.” His ultimate target hole is the heart-pounding sink-or-swim island green 17th, which offers no bailout, perhaps unfairly in windy Atlantic coast conditions. The 17th has spawned over a hundred imitation island greens in the past 40 years. To make the layout even more exciting during tournament play, Steve Wenzloff of PGA Tour Design Services recently remodeled several holes, most significantly the 12th, which is now a drivable par 4.
